2018 Tour Championship First Round Notes

In the first round of the 2018 Tour Championship, Rickie Fowler two putted for birdie at the 18th hole and shot a 5-under par 65 to take the early lead but, just a few groups behind, Tiger Woods hit a great second shot to the final hole to set up an eagle chance that would tie Fowler.

From about 28 feet away. Tiger lined up his eagle putt, a tricky downhill left to right breaker. Tiger gave it a roll and it started down the hill and toward the hole, breaking to the right all the way. The ball edged closer and finally dropped in the left side with perfect speed, putting Tiger on top with Fowler.

Gary Woodland and Justin Rose were tied for third place with 66 and Rory McIlroy, 2017 FedEx Cup Champion Justin Thomas and the final U.S. Ryder Cup captain’s pick Tony Finau were all tied for fifth place with 67.

2018 Tour Championship Third Round Notes

There was a two shot swing on the first hole of the third round as Tiger Woods made a birdie to go 8-under par and Justin Rose made a bogey to drop to 6-under. Rory McIlroy birdied the 2nd and the 3rd to get to 7-under par and 2nd place alone at that point.

Rose bogeyed the 2nd hole, then Tiger and Rose both birdied the 3rd, giving Tiger a two shot lead at 9-under par and moving Rose back to 6-under. The birdie was the first of five in a row for Tiger and six of the first seven holes and vaulting him to 13-under par and a five shot lead.

Rose couldn’t quite keep pace, making birdies at 5 and 6 and moving to 8-under par and back into 2nd place, while Rory made a bogey at the 7th hole and dropped to 6-under. Tiger made a bogey at the 9th and dropped to 12-under and four ahead.

Rory got a birdie at the 11th hole to get back to 7-under par, and then Tiger and Rose birdied the 12th, moving Tiger once again to 13-under and Rose to 9-under. Rose bogeyed the 14th, though, and fell back to 8-under par.

Rory made a birdie at the 16th hole and moved to 8-under par. Tiger would bogey the 16th, dropping back to 12-under, while Rose birdied, returning him to 9-under. Rory birdied the 18th hole to tie Rose at 9-under par.

Neither Tiger nor Rose were able to birdie the par-5 18th, and both made par on the hole. Tiger led by three at 12-under par with Rory and Rose tied for 2nd place at 9-under. Rory, by posting the score before Rose, would play in the final group with Tiger.

2018 Tour Championship Final Round Notes

Tiger Woods birdied the first hole to stretch his lead to four shots at 13-under par after a nice approach had left him ten feet away. Dustin Johnson birdied the 5th and the 6th to get to 6-under par and just behind him, Billy Horschel did the same and moved to 7-under par.

Rory McIlroy, in the final pairing with Tiger, bogeyed the 4th hole to fall to 8-under par and, in the pairing just in front of them, Justin Rose bogeyed the 5th and he too fell to 8-under and Tiger’s lead was five strokes. Up ahead, Jon Rahm birdied the 6th to go 6-under par and Rory bogeyed the 5th to fall to 7-under.

Kyle Stanley, playing wiht Rose, birdied the 6th hole to get to 7-under par and, coming up behind them, Rory also birdied the 6th to get back to 8-under. Later, Horschel birdied the 9th hole to to get back to 7-under par after a bogey at the 7th had dropped him back.

Stanley bogeyed the 7th hole and fell to 6-under par and then after that Rory made double bogey there as well and he too dropped to 6-under. Horschel bogeyed the 10th hole to once again fall to 6-under par and then Rose birdied the 8th to get to 9-under.

Rory bogeyed the 8th hole to fall to 5-under par and would not be a factor for the rest of the round. Rose bogeyed the 9th hole to drop to 8-under par and Horschel birdied the 12th hole to get back to 7-under par again. Up ahead, Matsuyama birdied the tough 16th and moved to 6-under par.

Tiger bogeyed the 10th hole and fell to 12-under par while, at the 18th hole, first round co-leader Rickie Fowler was closing out a 65 to finish at 5-under par. Rose bogeyed the 11th to drop to 7-under par and D.J. bogeyed the 14th, but then birdied the 15th and got back to 6-under par.

Horschel birdied the 15th hole as well to move to 8-under par in 2nd place and Matsuyama birdied the 18th to match Fowler’s 65 for the rounds of the day and he finished at 6-under par. Tiger birdied the 13th hole to get back to 13-under par and a five shot lead. Webb Simpson shot a 67 and finished at 6-under par.

Thomas came in with a 69 to finish at 5-under par and D.J. birdied the 17th hole to move to 7-under par. Rose bogeyed the 14th hole to fall to 6-under par and Xander Schauffele finished up at 5-under par with a 69. D.J. put his second into the front bunker at the par-5 18th and he needed to get up and down to have a chance at 2nd place and the FedEx Cup.

D.J. hit the bunker shot to within 5 1/2 feet of the cup but he just lipped out the putt, giving him a 67 and 7-under par, one shot behind Horschel. Tiger made it interesting when his tee shot just carried the water at the par-3 15th hole, but he made an easy bogey, dropping only one stroke to 12-under par.

Horschel birdied the 18th hole to shoot 66 and finish at 9-under par, three shots behind Tiger. Rose then bogeyed the 16th hole and fell to 5-under par, also dropping out of the lead for the FedEx Cup for the first time all day and giving Tiger a chance at the season long title.

Tiger bogeyed the 16th hole after being forced to pitch out and he dropped to 11-under par, just two strokes ahead of Horschel. Tiger went long over the green from the left rough on the 17th hole and Rose, needing a birdie to win the FedEx Cup, incredibly drove it through fairway on the 18th.

Tiger got it to four feet and made par at the 17th hole and Rose got a nice bounce with his second and got it on in two at the 18th. Rose putted up close and birdied the final hole for a 73, clinching the FedEx Cup and finishing at 6-under par in a tie for 4th place.

Tiger made a par at the final hole to shoot 71 and finish at 11-under par for a two stroke victory over Horschel. It was Tiger’s 80th PGA Tour victory, but it was his first win in five years and the culmination of a season that saw him progress to this point, getting better and better as the year went along.
