Coming Up This Week In Golf | July 5th-8th, 2018

This week in golf one of the main themes for the men’s game is the Open Championship Qualifying Series. The Open Championship Qualifying Series is a tournament within a tournament that allows tour players the opportunity to qualify for The 147th Open Championship at Carnoustie, if they have not already done so. This week’s events on the PGA Tour and the European Tour will both be part of the Open Championship Qualifying Series.

The LPGA Tour will be playing nine miles from Lambeau Field where the Green Bay Packers play. The Web.com Tour travels to western New York and the PGA Tour Champions is taking this week off to gear up for another major, The Senior Players Championship.

PGA Tour – A Military Tribute At The Greenbrier

Formerly known as The Greenbrier Classic, this week’s PGA Tour event returns to The Greenbrier’s Old White TPC course in White Sulpher Springs, West Virginia. Designed by C.B. Macdonald and opened in 1914, the golf course today measures 7,286 yards and plays to a par of 70. Xander Schauffele returns as the defending champion, winning by one stroke over Robert Streb last year.

Course History

Old White TPC has undergone numerous changes through the years, beginning in 1922 when Macdonald’s associate Seth Raynor, who had assisted in the original construction, returned to make changes that reportedly would make the course more friendly to resort guests. Over the years following, the course moved away from some of its original design characteristics.

In 2002, golf course architect Lester George was hired in an attempt to restore the course to its original design strategy and concept. Thorough research was performed on the Macdonald and Raynor design features and in 2006, the course was reopened. Old White received the TPC designation in 2011.

After a devastating flood in 2016 caused severe damage to the course and the surrounding communities, that year’s event was canceled. The Old White TPC reopened once more in July 2017, having been fully restored by golf course architect Keith Foster.

Open Championship Qualifying Series

There will be 4 positions available into The 147th Open Championship in this event. Four players not already exempt who finish within the top 12 this week will gain entry into The 147th Open Championship. Last year’s qualifiers from this event were Robert Streb, Jamie Lovemark, Sebastian Munoz and the winner of The Greenbrier Classic, Xander Schauffele.
