Paul Broadhurst shot a beautiful bogey-free 8-under par 63, finishing at 19-under par, to win the 2018 KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship at Harbor Shores, by 4 strokes over Tim Petrovic. Broadhurst’s rounds of 72-66-64-63, for a total of 265, tied the tournament record of Rocco Mediate, who won here in 2016. The win became Broadhurst’s second senior major, as he had also won the Senior Open Championship in 2016.
Broadhurst began the day at 11-under par, two shots behind Petrovic and Scott McCarron, but with four birdies on the front nine, he was tied for the lead at 15-under heading to the back. When Broadhurst made birdie at the par-4 12th hole, he took the lead for good at 17-under par. After Petrovic had bogeyed the par-4 16th hole to fall two shots back, Broadhurst birdied the par-3 17th hole to take a three stroke lead to the final hole. Broadhurst then banged home a long birdie putt at the last hole to provide the final margin.
PGA Tour – Fort Worth Invitational
Justin Rose birdied five of his first seven holes and cruised to a three shot victory over Brooks Koepka in the Fort Worth Invitational at Colonial Country Club. The former U. S. Open Champions, Rose in 2013 and Koepka just last year in 2017, both played beautifully, often matching each other shot for shot, and putt for putt. Rose, winner of the gold medal at the 2016 Olympic Games, finished at 20-under par 260, for his ninth career victory on the PGA Tour.
Beginning the day with a four shot lead over Koepka and Emiliano Grillo, Rose birdied the first two holes, but Koepka matched him on both. When Rose bogeyed the 3rd hole, his lead was cut to three. A birdie on the 5th gave Rose a four shot lead again. Rose and Koepka again matched birdies at the 6th and 7th holes, but Rose birdied the ninth to up his lead to five at the turn. Grillo, playing in the group just ahead of Rose and Koepka, had four birdies of his own on the front nine to remained tied with Koepka at that point.
Matching birdies by Rose and Koepka at 11 kept the margin at five, but then a birdie by Koepka at 13 cut Rose’s lead to four again. Both players birdied the 15th, and then Koepka birdied the 17th hole to cut the lead to three, but was unable to put any pressure on Rose at the final hole, where both players eventually made bogey. Grillo birdied the 16th and the 18th to finish third at 16-under par 264, one stroke behind Koepka. Kevin Na tied the course record with a blistering 9-under par 61 to finish fourth at 14 under par 266, four strokes ahead of Kevin Tway, Jon Rahm, and Louis Oosthuizen, each of whom finished tied for fifth at 10-under par 270.
European Tour – BMW PGA Championship
Francesco Molinari won the 2018 BMW PGA Championship after numerous close calls at the event, including a runner-up finish last year. Molinari, who has also had four other top-10s here in the last six years, finished with a 17-under par 271, finishing two shots in front of Rory McIlroy, who had begun the day tied for the lead. Playing the final 36 holes without a bogey, and with only two for the entire tournament, Molinari was able to forge ahead of McIlroy with early birdies at the third and fourth holes, eventually garnering himself a four shot lead. By the time McIlroy birdied the final two holes to close the gap, the best he could do was secure a second place finish alone.
LPGA Tour – LPGA Volvik Championship
Minjee Lee shot a 4-under par 68, finishing at 16-under par 272, to win the 2018 LPGA Volvik Championship by one stroke over In-Kyung Kim, who had a 5-under par 67. It was Lee’s fourth LPGA Tour victory, and her first since 2016, when she won twice. Moriya Jutanugarn shot a 7-under par 65, finishing third at 14-under, one shot ahead of Su Oh and Lindy Duncan.
Web.com Tour
On the Web.com Tour this week, Cameron Davis came from six shots behind to win the 2018 Nashville Golf Open, for his first Web.com Tour victory. Davis knocked in a short birdie putt on the final hole to defeat a trio of players, Kevin Dougherty, Josh Teater and Lanto Griffin, by one stroke. Davis shot a 7-under par 65 to finish with a total of 18 under par 270.
