PGA Tour | 2018 Wyndham Championship Report

In the first round of the 2018 Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina, Brandt Snedeker fired an 11-under par 59 to take a four shot lead after 18 holes. Snedeker maintained a two shot lead after 36 holes and led by three when third round play was suspended due to weather.

By the time everyone had finished their third round on Sunday morning, Snedeker’s lead was down to one. During the final round, Webb Simpson fired a 62 to post 18-under par, but Snedeker pushed it to 20-under. C.T. Pan also got to 20-under par and remained tied with Snedeker heading into the final hole.

Pan knocked his tee shot out of bounds and made a double bogey to finish tied with Simpson at 18-under, leaving Snedeker needing only a bogey to win. When Snedeker hit the green with his second shot he knew the win was his and when he rolled in the birdie to finish at 21-under par, it completed the magical week.

This was Snedeker’s first win on the PGA Tour this season and moved him to 30th on the Fedex Cup standings, putting him in great position for the playoffs. The victory was Snedeker’s ninth career win on the PGA Tour and his second at the Wyndham Championship.

Stay tuned for a separate story detailing player movement in the Fedex Cup standings during the 2018 Wyndham Championship.

European Tour | 2018 Nordea Masters Report

A playoff was required to determine the winner of the 2018 Nordea Masters at Hills Golf Club in Gothenburg, Sweden. After beginning the final round tied for the lead at 12-under par, Thomas Aiken and Paul Waring each held the lead at different times on the day. Aiken began with a birdie at the 1st hole to jump ahead by one shot, then Waring birdied the 2nd and the two men were tied again at 13-under par.

Aiken birdied the 3rd hole to get to 14-under and lead by one again, but two straight bogeys at the 4th and the 5th dropped him to 12-under, giving Waring a one shot lead. Waring pushed his lead to two shots at 14-under par with a birdie at the 10th hole, but Aiken birdied the 12th to get back to within one.

Waring birdied the 13th hole to go two shots ahead at 15-under par but a bogey at the 15th cut his lead back to one again at 14-under. It stayed like that until the 18th hole where Aiken made a birdie to tie Waring at 14-under par and force the playoff, with both men shooting a 2-under par 68.

The playoff began back at the 18th tee and Waring won the draw to go first. Waring hit his tee shot into the fairway, while Aiken knocked his into a hazard, leading to a bogey, and Waring was able to cruise to a par for his first European Tour victory.

Maximilian Kieffer, who finished in 3rd place, had set the early target at 13-under par with a final round 65 that included a 5-under par 29 on the back nine where he made five birdies, two bogeys, one par and an eagle.

Thorbjørn Olesen moved himself into position for the Ryder Cup team with his 4th place finish at 12-under par after a solid final round 67, bumping Ian Poulter down the list and continuing his good play this year. Oleson was probably going to be a captain’s selection anyway, but now Poulter must hope to move back up over the next two weeks, or face the need for a captain’s selection himself.

Golf Talk Times will post a future story with full Ryder Cup standings and captain’s selections.

LPGA Tour | 2018 Indy Women in Tech Championship Report

Lizette Salas shot a blistering first round 10-under par 62 in the 2018 Indy Women in Tech Championship to take a two shot lead over Angel Yin and Nasa Hataoka, who both had a 64. She held onto a share of the lead at 13-under par after a second round 69 with Jin Young Ko, who had followed up a first round 65 with a second round 66.

Salas entered the final round at 21-under par with a two shot lead over Sung Hyun Park and Amy Yang after a third round 64. During the final round, Salas maintained a one or two shot lead for most of the day, but a bogey at the 17th hole dropped her into a tie with Park and left her needing a birdie at the short par-4 18th to win.

She made a valiant effort after driving into the rough behind a high mound, slashing out to put her second shot about 6 feet from the hole. Salas was unable to capitalize and settled for par, finishing at 23-under par with a 2-under par 70. This put her in a playoff back at the 18th tee with Sung Hyun Park, who shot a final round 68.

Both players hit the green with their second shot with Salas a little over 20 feet away, coming up the hill and breaking left to right. Salas gave it a run just missing on the high side. Park had put her second about 12 feet away above the hole on a similar line as Salas had on the final hole of regulation play.

Park rolled her putt down the hill, the ball breaking about an inch to the left and into the center of the hole for her third LPGA Tour victory of the year, including the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship. Park now has five career victories with two majors in just her second season on the LPGA Tour.
