2018 Omega European Masters Final Round Notes
Lucas Bjerregaard jumped out of the pack that started the final round at 10-under par with a 5-under par 30 on the front nine, giving him the lead at 15-under par. Michael Lorenzo-Vera was able to tie Bjerregaard when he made a birdie at the 9th hole to turn in 32. Matthew Fitzpatrick was one shot back at 14-under after he also birdied the 9th.
Lorenzo-Vera birdied the 10th hole to take the lead at 16-under par, and Bjerregaard birdied the 14th hole to tie him at 16-under, as Fitzpatrick birdied the 12th to move to 15-under, one shot behind. Bjerregaard then birdied the 15th hole to move to 17-under par, and Lorenzo-Vera birdied the 13th hole to tie it up again.
But Lorenzo-Vera made a double-bogey at the 14th hole to drop to 15-under par and two shots behind Bjerregaard. Lorenzo-Vera bounced back with a birdie at the 15th to get to 16-under, but Fitzpatrick birdied the 15th as well to get to 16-under and only one shot back of Bjerregaard, who had parred in to finish at 17-under par with a final round of 63.
Fitzpatrick made an 8-foot birdie putt at the last hole to shoot a 3-under par 67 and tie Bjerregaard at 17-under par. The two men returned to the 18th tee for a sudden death playoff. Both men gave themselves chances for birdie, with Bjerregaard just off the back about 20 feet away but it was Fitzpatrick who cashed in with a 15 footer to become the first player in 40 years to win back to back at the Omega European Masters, since Seve Ballesteros performed the feat in 1977 and 1978.
See below this year’s highlights for some bonus video of the 1993 Canon European Masters that shows Seve still had the short game magic 15 years after he was a repeat champion in this event. Seve would lose by a single shot to Barry Lane in 1993, but his wizardry at the final hole stole the show.
